A cherished institution in the education landscape, the Teachers Refresher Course Committee (TRCC) celebrated its 70th birthday in December.

Speakers reflected on a successful past and looked to the future with caution and a call for educators to speak out on what is needed at the grassroots, in classrooms, for children. The TRCC has developed a unique style of professional development, based on a philosophy of “for teachers, by teachers”.

Courses are run based on identified and real need; they are developed and run by professionals; and are often intensive, live-in experiences that can change lives. The government is currently reviewing how PD is delivered in New Zealand. PD will be focussed around a narrow set of priorities, including maths and literacy, and what this will look like in practice is unclear. More on developments in PD in the autumn EA 2016.
