NZEI members have given a cautious Yes to the Ministry of Education’s Communities of Learning offer, which came out of our Joint Initiative work.

We did not achieve everything we wanted. We gathered the evidence, we investigated best practice, we put up the case. We lobbied. We negotiated. Even so, the ministry was unable to make an offer that would have been the best outcome for students’ learning. We have accepted second best. But the alternative was worse. A No vote would have been in effect a vote for the narrow, inflexible Communities of School model.

This way, we live to continue the good fight. We have brought ECE into the picture. There is a place for support staff, special education and Māori and Pasifika learners. We keep the fire and the fight alive.
