I am putting the case for spelling to again be recognised as an essential pre-condition of effective writing and not a secondary surface feature of writing.

Now that I am transitioning into full retirement, I am again, as one last lobbying initiative, expressing my serious concerns – as outlined to ERO officials and to Professor Stuart McNaughton as Student Achievement Advisor to the Ministry of Education – that many children need explicit and evidence-based remedial instruction in spelling. But they are not receiving it.

More about Craig Jackson’s spelling programme “ fonetik” at www.fonetik. org.nz. It is based on best-evidence practice and has been endorsed by the Ministry of Education. It works well for Year 3 students, particularly boys, and is linked from TKI under the description “phonetic spelling” (tki.org.nz).
