Educators are backing UNICEF’s new campaign for children’s rights.

The campaign, Make My Future Fair – Meinga tōku āmua kia tika, and its interactive website highlights children’s rights as they relate to education, health, violence, family and justice.

NZEI Te Riu Roa president Louise Green features on the website, which is loaded with facts and stories. Green says that New Zealand has one of the biggest gaps in achievement between students, and that because 80% of factors that affect learning happen outside of school, it is crucial to look at the whole child.

Early childhood education was particularly important. “It is wise investment, a sensible investment to look there rather than put the money into an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.” UNICEF says children have a right to “a broad education that develops children’s personalities and talents.”
